According to IBM’s 2016 Cyber Security Intelligence Index, cybercriminals are actually attacking the health care industry more than any other sector. Last year alone more than 100 million health care records were compromised. Theft of Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) are extremely sensitive information and resolving this type of theft is far more difficult than other forms like credit card information. Organizations are required by federal law to report breaches of PHI. The reputational effects of such notification should not be underestimated.
