BoardEffect's History

BoardEffect Leads the E-governance Movement for the Nonprofit Sector

Beginning in the early 2000's in the wake of major corporate scandals, a chorus of voices began clamoring for tougher regulations -- many aimed their harshest criticisms at boards of directors.  As is often the case, this trend swept the nonprofit sector in its wake, and by the end of the decade tougher requirements and recommendations were being placed on nonprofits that left board members scrambling to keep up.

At the time, Verve Internet Solutions -- a Philadelphia, PA-based website design and development firm specializing in web presences for nonprofits -- was just beginning to experiment with the development of hosted online solutions designed to enhance nonprofit effectiveness.  Leanne Bergey, who had used her extensive experience in nonprofit-specific technology to found Verve in 1996, was interested in meeting the challenge of helping nonprofits meet new regulations while focusing on their missions.  Understanding the value a highly-usable online solution would bring to nonprofit organizations, she gathered a team of experts to help design an efficient and effective board portal specifically for nonprofit organizations.

BoardEffect Timeline

Verve piloted a prototype of BoardEffect, called VerveShare for Boards, in 2004 with a handful of Philadelphia-area nonprofit organizations.  Based on the lessons learned from this early venture, the Verve team went back to the drawing board to create a new board portal that would emphasize best practices in governance as well as enhancing the efficiency of governance processes.  After extensive testing and refinement, BoardEffect® was launched in November 2007 and quickly became the industry leader in providing E-governance solutions for nonprofit organizations.  BoardEffect, Inc. was incorporated in 2009.

E-governance Thought Leadership

Now with thousands of board members logging in daily to the BoardEffect portal, the E-governance movement is continuing to enhance governance across the nonprofit sector, both in the U.S. and around the world.  In addition to its popular board portal, BoardEffect provides thought leadership in E-governance through educational publications, webinars, conference presentations and articles presented at events internationally each year.
